The Role of the Town Mayor

The Mayor is the first citizen of the town of St Neots.  This means that only her Majesty the Queen, members of the Royal Family, and the Lord Lieutenant take precedence over the Mayor at events in the Town.  The Mayor represents the Council as a whole in all civic and ceremonial matters and acts as a focal point for the community.

The role as Mayor of St Neots is to undertake civic and ceremonial duties as follows:

  • Chairs the Full Meeting of the Council

  • Promote the town of St Neots and act as a focal point for the community

  • Attend many different functions throughout St Neots such as formal dinners, official openings of events and facilities, talking to clubs and societies and visiting schools.

  • Act as host to distinguished visitors to the town

  • Furthering the interests of the town wherever and whenever an appropriate occasion arises in a non political way

At the beginning of each Mayoral year it is traditional for the Mayor to choose a charity of their choice and any funds raised during the year go to the charity to support their work.

People often ask how they should address the Mayor of St Neots and other local dignitaries. The full official title of the Mayor is The Worshipful the Mayor of St Neots but this title is only really used at very formal occasions, usually to introduce the Mayor in civic processions or when acknowledging the Mayor in a speech.

In correspondence or conversation, it is usual to address the Mayor as Mr Mayor or Madam Mayor, or simply by his her name.
